The Gambit everyone knows — charges a playing card, card explodes — is a surgically weakened Gambit. As a young thief, Remy LeBeau's kinetic powers grew uncontrollable, burning through him with more energy than he could withstand. Desperate, he went to the one surgeon no hero would trust: Mister Sinister, who removed a portion of Gambit's brain — described in sources as brain stem / cerebellum tissue — dampening his powers to a fraction of their potential so he could control them at all.
The surgery bought control at the price of a debt — the debt that led Gambit to assemble Sinister's Marauders. It also capped him well below his true ceiling: at full power, Gambit could charge living tissue and objects at a distance, by sight alone. The alternate-reality Gambit who never had the surgery — the New Sun — became a being of pure kinetic energy who destroyed his own Earth and killed his world's Phoenix.
Remy eventually got the missing piece back: time-traveling to the 19th century, he had a younger Sinister re-implant the preserved tissue, restoring his full power just long enough to travel home and duel the New Sun — then burned the excess power out beating him, settling back to his familiar, card-throwing level. He chose the lobotomy's limits, twice.
Why It's Obscure
Most X-Men fight to unlock their full potential. Gambit paid the team's worst enemy to remove his — then, given his god-level power back, used it once and deliberately burned it away. The card trick is a choice, not a limit of the mutation.
