Today's Fact
Everyone knows the heralds. Almost nobody knows the Devourer also maintains a robot constabulary aboard Taa II for problems he will not personally dignify.
Long before Frank Castle ever wore a skull, Galactus was fielding enforcers called Punishers — towering humanoid robots of living metal, stored aboard his worldship Taa II and deployed when an opponent ranked beneath the Devourer’s personal attention. They are, in effect, the cosmic equivalent of being handled by security.
A Punisher was set to guard Galactus’s planet-devouring machinery against the Fantastic Four in Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #74 (1968), and Galactus later dispatched another to Earth to hunt down his exiled former herald, the Silver Surfer — an errand the Fantastic Four spoiled, forcing Galactus to recall the machine and pursue the matter himself.
The robots are no ceremonial guard: Marvel’s records describe them as adaptive combatants that analyse an opponent and adjust, built from living metal of unknown origin gathered from a lost world. One abandoned Punisher was later salvaged and turned against heroes by the Rigellians — even Galactus’s discarded hardware stays dangerous.
Why It's Obscure
Heralds get the posters; the Punishers get the night shift — and they have been on it since 1968.
