Today's Fact
The one entry in the Devourer’s ledger that reads like gratitude.
Beaten down by Earth’s heroes and haunted by the ghosts of everyone he had ever consumed, Galactus lay dying — and Reed Richards refused to let him die. Over the objections of allies who thought the universe better off rid of the Devourer, Reed built a vast apparatus around the fallen giant and channelled the power of Thor’s hammer through it, dragging Galactus back from the brink in Fantastic Four #244.
Revived and still starving, Galactus was guided to uninhabited worlds, accepted the volunteer Frankie Raye as his new herald Nova, and departed with an astonishing admission: he thanked the Fantastic Four and counted them the closest thing to friends that a being such as himself could have. It remains one of the only times the Devourer of Worlds has ever expressed gratitude to anyone.
The mercy had a price. When Galactus later consumed the Skrull Throneworld, Princess Lilandra had Reed seized and put on trial for his life before a tribunal of survivors from devoured worlds — charged with every death Galactus had caused since the rescue. Reed’s unlikely character witness was Galactus himself, who appeared at the trial in Fantastic Four #262 to speak for the friend who had saved him, and summoned Eternity to prove his cosmic necessity.
Why It's Obscure
Everyone knows Galactus as the hunger; the two issues where he owes a debt — and pays it — are the strange, human footnote.
