Today's Fact

The herald Galactus valued most died in his service, and the Devourer’s grief took the strangest shape available to a cosmic god: a robot.

GALACTUS TRIED TO REBUILD HIS DEAD HERALD FROM A SPARK OF SOUL — THEN DISCARDED THE REPLICA FOR LACKING THE ORIGINAL’S FIRE!
The Featured Fact

The herald who arrived on Earth in Fantastic Four Vol. 1 #120 (1972) blowing a horn and calling himself Gabriel was not a man at all. Behind him stood Gabriel Lan, a Nova Corps captain commanding the explorer ship Way-Opener, whom Galactus had taken and remade as the Air-Walker, the herald who followed the Silver Surfer. Lan served willingly and devotedly for years — by several accounts, the closest thing the Devourer of Worlds has ever had to a friend.

Lan died defending his master, cut down by the Ovoids with weapons built to kill Galactus himself. Too weakened to save him in the moment, Galactus later did something he has done for no other servant: he caught the last spark of Lan’s soul and transferred his herald’s consciousness into a flawless android replica. The machine had Lan’s face, his memories and his power. What it did not have, Galactus judged, was Lan — the vitality and hunger for the wonders of space that had made the original worth choosing.

So the replica was spent as a tool: sent to Earth to lure the Silver Surfer back into service, and left behind when the Surfer refused and tore it apart. The full truth of Gabriel Lan — the living herald, his death, and the copy built from his soul — was only laid out years later, in Thor Vol. 1 #305–306 (1981), after the android had already fought half the Marvel Universe without anyone knowing what it was.

Why It's Obscure

Galactus discards planets without a flicker of feeling. The one time he tried to keep something, he discovered a soul cannot be photocopied.

Way-Opener
A captain, not a zealot — Gabriel Lan commanded a diplomatic explorer ship before Galactus scanned his mind and offered him the Power Cosmic; he accepted with open eyes.
1972
Android first — Readers met the Air-Walker as the robot in Fantastic Four #120; the living Lan’s story was withheld for nearly a decade.
Thor #306
The reveal — Thor Vol. 1 #305–306 (1981) finally tells it: the Ovoids’ kill, the soul-spark transfer, and the replica Galactus found wanting.
The flaw
Missing the man — The copy kept the memories and the might but not the passion for discovery — the exact quality Galactus had prized in Lan.
