Today's Fact

The Silver Surfer was not the first being Galactus ever sent ahead of his hunger. Eons earlier, Galactus empowered a herald remembered only as the Fallen One — a cosmic being whose true name has been forgotten across the ages, and whose first full accounting did not arrive until Thanos Vol. 1 #11 (2004), decades after readers had assumed the Surfer was the original.
The experiment failed on temperament. The Fallen One proved naturally corrupt, power-hungry and violent, and Galactus cast his own herald out of his service. Imprisonment did not reform him: over the centuries he was locked away repeatedly, and every escape sent him straight back on a revenge run at his former master, who defeated him every single time.
His last cage was the Kyln, the prison at the edge of the expanding universe, where he sat sealed in a cocoon after Star-Lord brought him down at a cost of hundreds of thousands of lives. When the Kyln’s power failed, the Fallen One broke free and finally reached Galactus’s ship — so Galactus simply teleported the problem onto Thanos, who beat the first herald in Thanos Vol. 1 #12 (2004) and mentally enslaved him as a herald of his own.
Why It's Obscure
Everyone remembers the chrome herald. Almost nobody remembers the first draft — because Galactus spent centuries making sure he stayed locked up.
