The purple helmet, the square jaw, the armor like a cathedral — that is not what Galactus looks like. That is what he looks like to us. Reference sources are blunt about it: his true form cannot be perceived by most beings, so every species that encounters him sees a version it can comprehend — a being resembling their own race, or a god of their own religion. Humanity’s Galactus is a giant man in armor because humanity’s imagination starts with itself.
The translation is not done by the viewer alone. The Marvel Database attributes it to the Manifestations, the cosmic mechanisms that render abstract entities into shapes a beholder’s mind can hold — which is why a Skrull’s Galactus is a Skrull, a human’s is a human, and nobody’s sketch of the Devourer has ever matched anybody else’s. Even his peers get a custom edition: when Galactus addresses the cosmic hierarchy itself, he can appear as a humanoid star.
Strip the translation away and what is underneath is barely a body at all. Galactus began as Galan of Taa, a mortal explorer of the universe before this one; when that cosmos died, he merged with its Sentience and passed into ours as a living force of nature — described as the physical, metamorphosed embodiment of a cosmos, standing as the third force between Eternity and Death. Without his armor — which exists to regulate his raging internal energies — he takes the form of crackling energy.
So every famous image of the Devourer is a portrait of the audience. Sixty years of artists have drawn the helmet and the scowl, and all of them were faithfully rendering the human edition. Whatever Galactus actually is, no comic has ever shown it — and by the rules of his own existence, none ever can.
