Today's Fact

After M-Day erased almost every mutant on Earth, Forge pointed a scanner at tomorrow itself — and the readout came back as one long, silent flat line.

FORGE SCANNED EVERY FUTURE AND FOUND THEM ALL FLATLINED — NO MUTANTS ANYWHERE, UNTIL ONE BABY SPLIT TIME IN TWO!
The Featured Fact

In the aftermath of M-Day, when the Scarlet Witch’s spell left only a remnant of mutantkind standing, Forge built a device to scan alternate timelines for surviving mutants. He was not looking for hope exactly — he was looking for data, the way he always does when grief needs a workbench.

What the scanner reported, as Forge later told Hank McCoy and then Jamie Madrox, was that the timelines had flatlined. Futures that should have teemed with mutants — the Age of Apocalypse line, the XSE future, the Nimrod future — returned nothing at all, as if mutantkind had been deleted from every tomorrow at once. (X-Factor Vol. 3 #23, 2007)

Then the first mutant baby since Decimation was born, and Forge’s dead readout split into exactly two living futures — one where the child saved mutantkind, one where she caused catastrophe. Forge sent a Madrox duplicate into each timeline to learn which was real, and Cable later fought his way to Forge’s own time-travel gear to carry the baby into the future himself.

Why It's Obscure

A machine that reads tomorrow sounds like a headline power — the obscure part is what it found: nothing, everywhere, all at once.

M-Day · 2005
The silence before — House of M ended with most mutants depowered; Forge’s scan asked whether any future had escaped the spell, and the answer was no.
#23 · 2007
The flatline report — In X-Factor Vol. 3 #23, Forge described futures — Age of Apocalypse, XSE, Nimrod — registering as flatlined, emptied of mutants or erased outright.
Two futures
One baby, two tomorrows — The messiah child’s birth split the flatline into two timelines with mutants in them, and Forge dispatched Madrox dupes to scout both.
The cost
A coma for the scout — Madrox Prime collapsed when his duplicates jumped; Forge tended his comatose body at Eagle Plaza while history was decided elsewhere.
