Today's Fact

After M-Day, the Maker tried to manufacture a mutant race — and it broke him.

FORGE WENT MAD ON MOUNT WUNDAGORE — HE GENE-SPLICED PEOPLE INTO ‘NEW MUTANTS’ AND TRIED TO OPEN A GHOST BOX TO ANOTHER EARTH!
The Featured Fact

In the aftermath of M-Day, Forge withdrew to the High Evolutionary’s abandoned complex on Mount Wundagore and set about reversing the mutant race’s near-extinction by force. Unable to create true mutants, he hammered synthetic genetic material into the DNA of human volunteers and produced unstable, monstrous “neo-mutants” — an army built to fight a war only he believed was coming.

The war, in Forge’s unraveling mind, was the Annexation: an invasion from a parallel Earth through the Ghost Boxes, trans-dimensional teleporters scattered by an alternate reality’s mutants. His plan was to open a Ghost Box and send his creations — and the X-Men — through it on a suicide strike to destroy the boxes at their source before the invasion could begin.

When the X-Men tracked him down, they found a man beyond reasoning. Storm offered him one last chance to abandon the complex and come home with them; Forge, bitter over her marriage and his own failures, refused. He stayed in the base as S.W.O.R.D.’s orbital laser destroyed Wundagore around him, and he was believed dead — until Cable later found the survivor and quite literally rebuilt his broken mind like one of his own machines.

Why It's Obscure

The Ghost Box arc is Forge’s darkest chapter, and it is routinely skipped in favour of the workshop-and-Storm highlights.

Mount Wundagore
The borrowed laboratory — Forge set up in the High Evolutionary’s old base, surrounding himself with gene-splicing equipment and his artificial mutant army.
Astonishing X-Men #29
The confrontation — Cyclops’s team followed a trail of Forge’s dead neo-mutants across the world before finally facing their creator in his mountain complex.
The Annexation
A real door, a mad plan — the Ghost Boxes genuinely led to a hostile parallel Earth; Forge’s madness lay in the army he built and the strike he demanded, not in inventing the threat.
The refusal
Storm’s last offer — Ororo begged Forge to leave with the team before the strike; he chose the ruins, screaming that she had rejected him first.
