Today's Fact

The first invention of his that truly mattered was not built for any government contract. It was the inventor’s own right side.

FORGE’S RIGHT HAND AND LEG ARE MACHINES HE BUILT HIMSELF — REPLACEMENTS FOR THE LIMBS A B-52 STRIKE HE CALLED IN TOOK FROM HIM!
The Featured Fact

Before he was the Maker, Forge was a Cheyenne soldier who had been trained as a medicine man and chose the Army instead. He rose to sergeant in the Vietnam War and turned down a recruitment offer from S.H.I.E.L.D. to stay with his unit. When that unit was wiped out and his grief-fuelled sorcery opened something that would not close, Forge did the arithmetic himself: he ordered a B-52 bombing run on his own position to seal it. The strike worked. It also cost him his right hand and his right leg.

His answer was the most Forge answer imaginable: he designed and built his own replacements. The cybernetic hand and leg he wears are his work, engineered with the same intuitive mutant gift that lets him invent machinery he only half understands — fully functional limbs first, and in later accounts far more than limbs, with the hand concealing tools and weaponry and the leg carrying systems of its own.

So when Forge debuted in The Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #184 (1984), already installed as the Defense Department’s weapons designer of choice, the metal on his right side was not a costume flourish or a villain’s affectation. It was a receipt: proof, worn in public every day, of the worst order he ever gave — and of the fact that the man who gave it then rebuilt himself by hand.

Why It's Obscure

Plenty of heroes carry scars. Forge carries engineering — his own, fitted over the exact places the war took from him.

Vietnam
The order — With his squad dead and a mystic gate standing open, Sergeant Forge calls an air strike onto his own coordinates to shut it.
Right side
The cost — The bombing takes his right hand and right leg — the same side, a matched pair of losses he would spend years answering.
Self-built
The replacements — His cybernetic hand and leg are his own designs; later accounts credit the hand with built-in tools and beams and the leg with power-dampening systems.
1984
There from the debut — The prosthetics are part of Forge from his very first panel in Uncanny X-Men #184 — no retcon, no later upgrade arc needed.
