Today's Fact

Cerebro used to be a mutant detector. Forge quietly turned it into something far stranger: a soul-sized filing system for an entire species.

FORGE DIDN'T INVENT CEREBRO — BUT HE REBUILT IT TO BACK UP EVERY MUTANT MIND ON EARTH, MAKING DEATH REPAIRABLE!
The Featured Fact

Forge did not build the original Cerebro — that was Charles Xavier’s mutant-tracking machine, older than most of the X-Men. What Forge did, when Xavier founded the mutant nation of Krakoa, was arguably much harder: Xavier commissioned him to add an entirely new function to the system, the ability to record and store a complete backup of every mutant’s mind — thoughts, memories, and personality — on a rolling basis. Forge himself stressed how complex the job was and how much work Cerebro would need to carry it.

The upgrade is the silent engine of Krakoa’s famous Resurrection Protocols. With a recent Forge-built backup sitting in Cerebro, the group of mutants known as the Five could grow a new body for a fallen mutant and Xavier could pour the stored mind back into it. Death, for the first time in the species’ history, came with an undo button — and the button was wired by a man whose own inventions usually needed taking apart before even he understood them.

It is easy to credit the spectacle — the eggs, the ceremonies, the returned heroes. The unglamorous truth is that mutant immortality ran on one inventor’s systems work: Shi’ar-powered storage, constant psychic backups, and a Cheyenne weaponsmith re-purposing a detection machine into the archive of a nation’s souls.

Why It's Obscure

Everybody remembers the resurrections. Almost nobody asks who built the backup drive.

2019
The commission — in the Krakoa era launched by House of X and Powers of X, Xavier tasks Forge with modifying Cerebro to store backups of mutant minds, not merely locate them.
The Five
Bodies are only half the job — the Five could grow a replacement body, but without Forge’s Cerebro backup there was no mind to put in it — the Protocols fail at step one without him.
Shi'ar tech
Storage at species scale — the upgraded Cerebro runs on Shi’ar technology, holding the recorded minds of thousands of mutants for instant restoration.
After Krakoa
The archive outlived the nation — even after Krakoa fell, the Cerebro helmets and their stored memories remained powerful enough to fight over — Forge’s backup system became a prize in its own right.
