FORGE PROPOSED TO STORM, THEN TOOK IT BACK BEFORE SHE COULD SAY YES — AND HER ANSWER WAS YES!
The Featured Fact

In Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #289 (1992), Forge asked Storm to marry him. She did not refuse him — she asked for time to think, which for most couples is a pause and for Forge became a countdown. By the following issue he had convinced himself that her hesitation was a verdict, and he resolved to deliver his own rejection before she could deliver hers.

His chosen instrument of research made everything worse. Forge pressed Jean Grey, a telepath who could have read the answer straight out of Storm’s mind, to tell him whether Storm truly loved him. Jean refused to betray that confidence either way, and Forge interpreted her principled silence as proof of the worst. A man who could diagnose any machine on Earth had just misread the clearest signal in his life.

In Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #290 (1992) Forge confronted Storm, announced that she would never leave the X-Men to build a life with him, retracted the proposal, and walked out — departing to care for the ailing Mystique instead. Only after he was gone did Storm say the word she had been preparing all along: she had been about to say yes. The inventor who could repair anything had broken the one thing that was never actually malfunctioning.

Why It's Obscure

He asked the question, hired a telepath as a referee, ignored the referee, and called the match before the other player had spoken.

1992
The question — Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 #289: Forge proposes to Storm in the middle of a heated stretch for the couple, and she asks for time rather than giving him the instant answer he wanted.
The referee
Jean says nothing — Asked to preview Storm’s feelings telepathically, Jean Grey refuses to disclose them, and Forge fills the silence with his own worst-case engineering.
#290
The walk-away — Forge tells Storm she will never leave the X-Men for him, withdraws the proposal, and leaves the mansion to look after Mystique.
The whisper
Her real answer — With Forge already gone, Storm admits quietly that she was going to accept him — a yes delivered to an empty room.
