The most image-conscious telepath in the Marvel Universe manufactured that image from the hair down. The Emma Frost solo series that launched in 2003 opens not on the White Queen but on a schoolgirl at Boston's Snow Valley School for Girls: shy, struggling in class, bullied by classmates — and sporting a full head of mousy brown hair.
Marvel's own retrospective on the series describes that younger Emma as “a meek, brunette” whose psychic migraines are only beginning to bloom into telepathy. The platinum icon — the sculpted wardrobe, the arctic palette, the whole glacial persona — arrives later, assembled piece by piece as Emma builds Frost International and storms the Hellfire Club.
Emma has never hidden the construction work. In New X-Men #139 (2003) she speaks openly about the cosmetic surgery she has had done on herself, treating her appearance the way she treats everything else: as an asset to be managed. The blonde is not a disguise, exactly — it is a founding decision, the first thing the powerless Boston schoolgirl ever got to choose about how the world would see her.
Why It's Obscure
Telepaths can rewrite what you think. Emma started by rewriting what you see — beginning with the girl in the Snow Valley mirror.
