EMMA FROST WAS SENT TO SEDUCE NAMOR — FELL IN LOVE, AND SHAW ERASED THE WHOLE AFFAIR!
The Featured Fact

Long before Utopia, before Scott Summers, the Hellfire Club sent its White Queen on an errand of seduction. Sebastian Shaw wanted Namor, Prince of Atlantis, as a king for the Club, and Namor had laughed the invitation away. So Shaw ordered Emma Frost to bring him in by any means necessary — and Emma, ever the professional, staged a drowning at sea so the Sub-Mariner would dive in and rescue her.

The performance then ruined itself by becoming real. In Uncanny X-Men Annual Vol. 2 #2 (2009), the flashback shows Emma spending two weeks in Atlantis at Namor's side, and the two genuinely falling for each other. Emma was preparing to betray the Club for him when Shaw, furious at her silence, sent Sentinels crashing into Atlantis to retrieve his property.

Shaw's cleanup was surgical. With Emma captured, his aide Tessa wiped Emma's memories of Namor clean away, restoring a loyal White Queen who remembered none of it. Shaw then taunted Namor to his face: the woman he loved no longer knew his name, and while Emma stood loyal at Shaw's side, Namor could never get close enough to take revenge.

The erasure held for years, until Emma rebuilt her mind after a later psychic catastrophe and the buried memories surfaced whole. By then she was with the X-Men, and the revelation reframed everything — the old flirtation Namor kept reviving on Utopia was not a prince's vanity. It was a man talking to the one person who had once chosen him, and who had been made to forget that she ever did.

Why It's Obscure

A staged drowning, two real weeks in Atlantis, and a memory removed like a stain.

The errand
Shaw's order — Namor had rejected the Hellfire Club's crown outright, so Shaw dispatched Emma to accomplish by seduction what diplomacy could not.
The dive
A staged rescue — Emma faked a drowning off a boat in the South China Sea, chaining a weight to her ankle so Namor's rescue would feel convincingly desperate.
Two weeks
Atlantis — Emma's stay beside Namor stretched far past any operational need; the feelings that grew there were the one outcome Shaw had not budgeted for.
The wipe
Tessa's work — Shaw's aide Tessa erased Emma's memories of Namor and her intended betrayal, handing the Club back a White Queen with a convenient blank.
2009
The reveal — Uncanny X-Men Annual Vol. 2 #2 finally tells the story, as Emma's recovered memories turn an old seduction into a debt Shaw must repay.
