XAVIER TRIED TO RECRUIT EMMA FROST FOR THE X-MEN — THEN ERASED HER MEMORY OF THE OFFER!
The Featured Fact

Long before Emma Frost stood beside Charles Xavier as a leader of mutantkind, she very nearly joined his school as a student of a very different kind — and she was never allowed to remember it. The encounter was revealed in X-Men: Deadly Genesis #5 (2006), Ed Brubaker's retcon of the desperate hours after the original X-Men were captured by the living island Krakoa.

Xavier and Moira MacTaggert were racing to assemble a rescue team, and their search reached a young Emma working as a dancer at the Hellfire Club, where she performed under the stage name Ice Princess and quietly used her telepathy to make audiences see whatever they wished to see. Xavier knew exactly what she was. He also knew the Hellfire Club's leadership already suspected her mutation, and he laid the offer before her anyway: come with him, and help save his students.

Emma hesitated, torn between a stage she controlled and a war that was not hers, and complications at the club cut the conversation short. Xavier made the decision for both of them. Rather than leave a powerful, unaligned telepath walking around with knowledge of his plans, he wiped the meeting from her mind — and from the memory of the club's bouncer as well — and went on recruiting elsewhere. Emma Frost's first invitation to the X-Men ended with the inviter editing it out of her history, years before she would take a seat at his right hand with no idea she had been asked once already.

Why It's Obscure

The White Queen's celebrated conversion to Xavier's cause looks rather different once you learn her file at his school was opened, and quietly shredded, decades earlier.

Ice Princess
The stage name — At the Hellfire Club, Emma danced under that billing and bent her act with telepathy — the audience's fantasies did half her choreography for her.
Krakoa
The emergency — Xavier was not building a roster for its own sake; his captured students were prisoners of a living island, and every hour spent recruiting was borrowed time.
Moira
The witness — Moira MacTaggert stood beside Xavier during the approach, one of the very few people who carried the memory Emma was made to lose.
The wipe
His solution — Xavier erased the encounter from Emma and from the bouncer Denny, a tidy ending that says as much about the professor's habits as about Emma's refusal.
2006
Deadly Genesis #5 — Brubaker's series reframed the Krakoa rescue era, and this scene reframed Emma's whole history with Xavier in a single erased conversation.
