EMMA FROST WAS SHOT INTO DIAMOND SHARDS — AND JEAN GREY PUT HER BACK TOGETHER!
The Featured Fact

Emma Frost's diamond form was supposed to be nearly indestructible, but it carried one structural flaw — and in Grant Morrison's New X-Men run, her own student found it. Esme Cuckoo, acting under the influence of Xorn, mind-controlled fellow student Angel Salvadore into firing a diamond bullet at that exact flaw while Emma stood in diamond form. Emma did not fall wounded. She shattered, across the floor of the Xavier Institute, in New X-Men #139–141 (2003).

The X-Men treated the scene like a murder investigation, because that is what it appeared to be — Bishop and Sage worked the case while suspicion circled Jean Grey, who had just discovered Emma's psychic affair with Scott Summers. But Emma's consciousness was still alive inside the shards. Beast gathered the pieces of her, fragment by fragment, so that nothing of the White Queen was swept away and lost.

Then came the resurrection nobody at the school would have predicted. Jean Grey, drawing on the Phoenix, sensed Emma's mind trapped in the remains and telekinetically fused the diamond body back together. Emma revived in front of the rival she had wronged — and her first act back among the living was to solve her own murder case, naming Esme as the mind behind the trigger.

Why It's Obscure

A diamond bullet, a floor full of glittering evidence, and a victim who attended her own reconstruction — Emma's death scene was also a detective story with the corpse as star witness.

The flaw
One weak point — Emma's organic diamond body had a single fault line, a secret worth killing for, and Esme Cuckoo learned exactly where it was.
The weapon
A diamond bullet — ordinary ammunition could never have done it; the shot that broke the White Queen had to be made of the same material she was.
The suspect
Jean, briefly — Jean had motive, opportunity and a fresh betrayal to avenge, which is precisely why the real culprit let her stand at the top of the list.
The pieces
Beast, on his knees — before any resurrection could happen, someone had to collect a person by hand, shard by shard, and Beast made sure every piece was accounted for.
2003
New X-Men #141 — Emma names Esme on revival, closing a murder investigation whose victim had been conscious, in pieces, for every minute of it.
