Before Emma Frost was an X-Man, she was a headmistress. As the Hellfire Club's White Queen, she ran the Massachusetts Academy and trained its mutant team, the Hellions - Jetstream, Catseye, Tarot, Roulette, Bevatron, Beef, Empath and others - as the Club's answer to Xavier's New Mutants. She began the job resenting it. She ended it genuinely fond of her students. That is when the story turns.
In Uncanny X-Men #281-282 (1991), the time-traveling Upstart Trevor Fitzroy attacked with future Sentinels to score points in the Upstarts' killing game. The Hellions fought beside the X-Men - and were slaughtered. Fitzroy drained the survivors to power his escape, and Emma, shielding her students, was left in a psychic coma, believed dead.
The cruelest beat came years later. Emma's wandering mind landed in Iceman's body - and in Uncanny X-Men #314 (1994), still wearing Bobby Drake, she finally learned the Hellions were dead. Her plea for the X-Men's forgiveness - because she knew she would never forgive herself - marks the turn: the guilt rebuilt her into the teacher who co-founded Generation X.
Why It's Obscure
Emma the villain is famous. Emma the grieving teacher - the one whose failure to protect her first class drives everything she does afterward - is the part most retellings skip.
