Emma Frost spent decades as a villain — the White Queen of the Hellfire Club, a telepath of the highest order. Then, teaching young mutants on the island nation of Genosha, she lived through its annihilation: a Wild Sentinel attack, orchestrated by Cassandra Nova, that killed 16 million mutants in New X-Men #115 (2001).
In the rubble, Emma survived — because at the moment of Genosha's destruction, her secondary mutation manifested: the ability to transform her body into organic diamond. Translucent, nearly invulnerable, tireless, needing no food, water, or breath — and numbed from emotion, pain, and empathy.
The trade is absolute: in diamond form she cannot use her psychic powers at all — but she is also totally immune to telepathic attack. And the form has one molecular flaw: struck the right way — say, with a diamond bullet — her body can shatter. The hardest woman in comics is also the most brittle.
Why It's Obscure
Everybody knows the diamond form. Almost nobody knows it arrived in the same instant 16 million people died — and that it cost her the telepathy that made her.
