Today's Fact

Her resurrection only worked because the man who loved her failed at it in exactly the right way.

DAREDEVIL FAILED TO RESURRECT ELEKTRA — BUT HIS FAILURE PURIFIED HER SOUL, AND A CHASTE WARRIOR FINISHED THE JOB!
The Featured Fact

After Bullseye killed Elektra, the Hand dug up her body to resurrect her as their own weapon. In Daredevil Vol. 1 #190 (1983), Daredevil and Stone of the Chaste race the ceremony, and at the critical moment Matt Murdock tries the Chaste’s life-restoring technique himself. He does not know how it is done, pours everything he has into the attempt, and collapses — by every measure, the resurrection has failed.

Except for the one measure that mattered. Stone realises that Matt’s botched attempt has done something nobody planned: it has purified Elektra, burning the Hand’s corruption out of her spirit. The woman the Hand intended to raise as a tainted assassin is suddenly clean — and therefore worth raising properly. Stone completes the process the Hand started, and Elektra vanishes with him.

The issue closes on a lone climber finally scaling the cliff the Chaste set as an impossible test, pulling off her hood at the summit: Elektra, alive, in white. One failed resurrection is the reason every Elektra story since exists — had Matt succeeded on his own terms, or not tried at all, she would have come back as the Hand’s creature instead of her own person.

Why It's Obscure

Resurrections are routine in comics. This one hinged on a botched first attempt doing a completely different job than the one it was aimed at.

1982
Death — Daredevil #181 — Bullseye impales Elektra on her own sai; she crawls to Matt Murdock’s door and dies in his arms.
1983
The race — Daredevil #190 — Frank Miller’s “Resurrection”: the Hand exhume the body, and Daredevil, Stone and Black Widow fight to reach it first.
The mistake that saved her
Purified, not revived — Matt’s untrained attempt cannot restart her heart, but Stone sees it has cleansed her spirit of the Hand’s taint.
The cost
Never meet again — Miller’s story carries a narrative note that Daredevil must never encounter the resurrected Elektra again — a condition later stories quietly walked back.
