Today's Fact

A rejection at age twelve set the course for everything Elektra became afterward.

THE CHASTE CAST ELEKTRA OUT FOR HER ANGER — SO SHE JOINED THE HAND TO DESTROY IT FROM INSIDE, AND THE HAND KEPT HER INSTEAD!
The Featured Fact

At twelve years old, Elektra Natchios had already outgrown her first martial-arts teacher, who sent her to find the Chaste, the warrior order led by the blind master Stick. She climbed to their mountain stronghold, was taken in as a trainee — and was then cast out. Stick judged the anger and darkness in her soul too strong for the order, and no amount of skill with the sai she had chosen as her weapon could change his verdict.

Elektra refused to accept the rejection as the end of the story. Her plan was audacious: she would join the Chaste’s mortal enemies, the ninja cult called the Hand, earn their trust, and dismantle them from within — proving to Stick that he had misjudged her. It is one of the boldest undercover gambits any Marvel hero ever attempted, and she attempted it as a young woman acting entirely alone.

The gambit failed in the slowest, cruellest way. Inside the Hand, Elektra was mentored by Aka, who — unlike Stick — listened to her and pretended to care. Years of feigned loyalty hardened into the real thing: the corruption she had meant to infiltrate seeped into her instead. By the time she surfaced in Daredevil’s life again, the would-be destroyer of the Hand had become its deadliest assassin.

Why It's Obscure

Stick’s expulsion gets a panel or two in most retellings; the infiltration plan behind her Hand years rarely gets explained at all.

Age twelve
Outgrowing the teacher — Elektra’s first sensei exhausted everything he could teach her within two years and pointed her toward the Chaste and Stick.
The verdict
Too angry to belong — Stick sensed the hatred in his pupil and expelled her from the order, a judgment later accounts describe as finding her soul too dark for the Chaste.
Elektra Vol. 1 #1
The mountain months — the 1996 series shows the young Elektra performing menial labour for the Chaste while training, desperate to earn a place Stick would never grant her.
The long shadow
Rejected twice over — when Matt Murdock later led the Hand, the Chaste asked Elektra to rejoin them; she refused, citing exactly how they had thrown her away.
