Today's Fact
Her first breath and her mother’s last one share a date, a beach, and a family secret that stayed buried for decades.
Elektra Natchios never had a chance to meet her mother. In the flashbacks of Elektra: Root of Evil Vol. 1 #1–4 (1995), her father Hugo confides to his adolescent son Orestez that he doubts the child Christina is carrying is his, and the boy promises that his mother will never shame the family again. Hugo never grasps what he has just agreed to. On August 13, a helicopter opens fire on the couple as they holiday in the Aegean: Christina is the target, Hugo is hit as well, and Christina dies in hospital shortly after giving premature birth to a daughter.
A paternity test later confirmed the baby was Hugo’s all along, which makes the contract Orestez placed one of the bleakest misreadings in Marvel family history. Sickened that his hired cruelty nearly killed his father too, the boy exiled himself from the estate and vanished from his baby sister’s life before she could form a single memory of him.
Then, nine years later, he came back for exactly one afternoon. When a group of grown men assaulted the nine-year-old Elektra, Orestez slaughtered her attackers, then advised Hugo that the girl needed to learn self-defense. That advice is the reason a sensei was hired — Elektra’s entire martial-arts path, the road that leads to the Chaste, the Hand and the sai, starts with the brother who orphaned her trying to pay a debt he could never say out loud.
Why It's Obscure
Most assassin origins begin with a recruiter or a tragedy on the street. Hers begins with a hit ordered inside her own family, before she was born.
