Today's Fact
A resurrection with a receipt: the darkness Matt Murdock purged from Elektra did not vanish — it changed address, twice.
When Daredevil purified Elektra Natchios and Stone raised her from the dead, the ritual left something behind: the murderous part of her soul, separated from the woman herself during the events retold around Daredevil Vol. 1 #190 (1983). That darkness did not stay loose for long. Years earlier, in the pages of Elektra: Assassin, Elektra had mind-melded with the cyborg agent John Garrett — and a copy of her dark essence had been quietly lodging inside his head ever since, like a tenant nobody had evicted.
In the Fall From Grace storyline, the Snakeroot, a hard-line clan inside the Hand, broke Garrett out of S.H.I.E.L.D. storage and distilled that essence out of him. In Daredevil Vol. 1 #322 (1993) they poured it into a dead woman’s body and woke her up as Erynys — a savage mirror of Elektra, right down to a jagged-edged version of her signature sai. All Erynys needed to make the resurrection permanent was a bioweapon called the About Face virus, and she cut her way through everyone standing between her and it, Stick included.
The finale, Daredevil Vol. 1 #325 (1993), put the two Elektras in the same room. Erynys got her hands around the original’s throat and begged Daredevil to finish the job so she could take Elektra’s place — and her lover — for good. Matt threw the sais; Elektra twisted at the last instant, the blades skewered Erynys and grazed Elektra’s shoulders, and the dark essence flowed back into the woman it had been stolen from. Elektra walked away whole again — which, for Elektra, means the darkness came home too.
Why It's Obscure
Most resurrections hand a character a clean slate. Hers arrived with the old slate walking around on its own, armed.
