FOR OVER A YEAR, THE ELEKTRA LEADING THE HAND WASN’T ELEKTRA AT ALL — SHE WAS A SKRULL, AND HER DEATH LAUNCHED THE SECRET INVASION!
The Featured Fact

The Elektra who came back from the dead and took command of the Hand — the one who sparred with the New Avengers and made herself the most wanted assassin alive — was not Elektra Natchios. She was Pagon, a Skrull agent wearing Elektra’s face, memories, and skills, deep undercover in the heart of Earth’s deadliest ninja cult. The real Elektra was a prisoner, held aboard a Skrull ship while her double lived her life.

The deception ran deeper than one impostor. Marvel later showed the switch happened early — Pagon’s capture of Elektra was depicted in Mighty Avengers #16, placing the swap before the New Avengers had even formed. Pagon’s orders were pointed: run the Hand, spread chaos among Earth’s heroes and killers — and, when the time came, be discovered. The Skrulls wanted the reveal. A dead “Elektra” turning green in front of the Avengers would poison every alliance on Earth with suspicion.

It worked perfectly. In New Avengers #31 (2007), cornered by the Avengers, “Elektra” was run through by Echo — Maya Lopez — and died… and reverted to her true Skrull form in front of them all. It was the first hard proof that the infiltration had already happened — the opening shot of Secret Invasion. The real Elektra finally walked out of a downed Skrull ship when the invasion ended in 2008, and had to rebuild her life in a world that had watched “her” die as an alien.

Why It's Obscure

An impostor wore the red, ran the Hand, and died in front of the Avengers — and nobody knew until the body changed.

2007
The reveal — New Avengers #31: Echo kills “Elektra,” the corpse reverts to a Skrull, and every hero on Earth learns the same lesson at once — anyone could already be replaced.
The swap
Earlier than anyone thought — Mighty Avengers #16 later depicted Pagon’s capture of the real Elektra, dating the replacement to before the New Avengers’ first mission.
The mission
Discord as a weapon — Pagon took over the Hand itself, turning Earth’s most feared assassins into a Skrull asset — and was meant to be found out. Sowing distrust was the point.
2009
The real one returns — freed when the invasion fell, the genuine Elektra resurfaced in Dark Reign: Elektra — hunted by H.A.M.M.E.R., and very much herself.
