EGO THE LIVING PLANET

Today's Fact

The universe's oldest bachelors' club had one vacancy a planet could fill — and Ego took the seat, the venue hire and the grudge that came with it.

EGO JOINED THE ELDERS OF THE UNIVERSE — AND HOSTED THE MEETING TO MURDER GALACTUS ON HIS OWN FACE!
The Featured Fact

The Elders of the Universe are the last survivors of species that evolved earliest in creation — each one, by definition, the only one of his kind left. In Silver Surfer Vol. 3 (1987–1988), Ego the Living Planet took his place among them, and on paper nobody could argue with the application: there is exactly one living planet, and he is it.

The Elders had a project. Galactus predated even them — a survivor of the universe before this one — and the Elders reasoned that if they gathered the Infinity Gems and used them to siphon the Devourer's stolen life-energy away into six empty worlds, Galactus would die, the balance between Eternity and Death would snap, the universe would end, and they would be reborn as the eldest beings of whatever came next. The planning sessions for this cosmic murder were held, repeatedly, on Ego's surface — the agenda discussed while standing on a fellow conspirator.

It nearly worked as a secret. The Silver Surfer and Mantis slipped onto Ego to spy on one of those summit meetings, but you cannot sneak across a landscape that is itself a telepath: Ego sensed the intruders standing on him, the spies barely escaped, and the Surfer later beat Ego himself in open battle, benching the living planet before the Elders' endgame against Galactus ever properly began.

Why It's Obscure

A membership card, a murder plot, and the worst possible choice of conference room — one that could hear every word.

The membership rule
Last of his kind, by definition — Elder status belongs to sole survivors of ancient races. Ego did not join a species; he is the species, the habitat and the census all at once.
The venue
Meetings on a member — the Elders held their Galactus summits on Ego's surface, plotting beneath a sky that was also a co-conspirator with opinions, weather and earthquakes.
The weapon
Six gems, six worlds — the plan was not to outfight Galactus but to drain him: gem-power would pour his hoarded planetary life-force into six barren worlds until nothing was left.
The spy problem
You cannot tiptoe on a telepath — the Surfer and Mantis lasted only until Ego noticed the footsteps. A living planet is the one conference venue that is guaranteed to be listening.
