Today's Fact

The most recognisable face in X-Force was labelled before it was ever drawn on: her signature mark began as paperwork.

DOMINO'S BLACK EYE CIRCLE ISN'T A TATTOO SHE CHOSE — IT'S A LAB TAG FROM THE PROGRAM THAT BRED HER!
The Featured Fact

Look closely at Domino and the detail everyone copies first is the solid black circle ringing her left eye, set into chalk-white skin. It reads like war paint or a tattoo she picked for herself. In canon it is neither a fashion choice nor ordinary makeup: reference sources list the white skin and the black circle as her unusual features, and the circle began as a mark applied to the children of Project: Armageddon, the government breeding program that produced her, so its scientists could tell their experiments apart.

That is what makes the mark so bleak underneath the style. Before Neena Thurman had a codename, a team or a single mission, the program had already tagged her face the way a lab tags a specimen — one glance told the staff which test subject they were looking at. Her own investigations into the program, retold across the Domino miniseries of 2003, kept circling back to that childhood of tests, tags and verdicts.

The cruellest part of the labelling is that it outlived the lab. The program was shut down, its files buried and its surviving subject written off as a failure, yet the tag stayed permanently visible on the face of the mercenary who escaped — Domino has carried her experiment number’s worth of ink into every X-Force lineup photo ever since.

Why It's Obscure

Plenty of heroes choose a striking look. Domino’s was assigned to her by the people who built her, years before she got a say in anything.

The program
Project: Armageddon — A secret scheme to breed the perfect living weapon; nearly every child it produced died in testing, and the survivors were marked around one eye.
The features
Chalk and ink — Marvel reference listings describe Domino’s distinguishing features exactly: chalk-white skin and a natural black marking around her left eye.
The family resemblance
Lazarus — When Domino finally found the program’s hidden base, the boy kept there — her brother Lazarus — carried a matching eye mark of his own.
The irony
Branded a failure — The tagged “failure” became an X-Force mainstay for three decades; the tag is now the most imitated part of her design.
