Today's Fact
Between Stephen and Strange sits a borrowed name — borrowed from the silver screen's most elegant sorcerer of scares.
Read the Sorcerer Supreme's full name slowly: Stephen Vincent Strange. That middle name is a deliberate dedication. When artist Steve Ditko designed the Master of the Mystic Arts for his debut in Strange Tales Vol. 1 #110 (1963), he modelled the character's lean face, arched brows and pencil moustache on Vincent Price, the horror star then famous for playing elegant, soft-spoken dabblers in forbidden arts.
The timing was no accident. Price had just played the sorcerer Erasmus Craven in Roger Corman's horror-comedy The Raven in 1963, the same year Strange first materialised in print — a magician in a high-collared cloak trading spells on screen while his comic-book counterpart began doing the same on the page. The middle name Vincent locks the homage into the character's legal identity, where it has sat through six decades of spells, surgeries and resurrections.
So the most powerful magician in the Marvel Universe carries a piece of horror cinema in every signature and case file. Strange's creators built him from black-magic radio drama and Ditko's imagination, but his face and his middle name both answer to the same gentleman ghoul of Hollywood — a tribute hiding in plain sight on the character's birth certificate.
Why It's Obscure
Plenty of heroes are drawn after actors; very few carry the actor's name into canon as their own.
