Today's Fact
Stripped of the Vishanti's mantle, Earth's ex-sorcerer treated sick animals and one very talkative ghost dog.
The Vishanti stripped Stephen Strange of the Sorcerer Supreme title and handed it to Loki — who, to general horror, performed the job competently. Strange, in Doctor Strange Vol. 1 #381 (2017), did the only sensible thing a man with ruined hands, no mantle and a medical education could do: he opened a veterinary practice and started treating animals instead of dimensions.
His most famous patient became his partner. Bats, an elderly bloodhound, died on Strange's table after a fall — and Strange, burning a favour's worth of magic, let the dog's ghost remain at his side, audible to anyone Stephen permitted. The dead basset hound became the practice's receptionist, conscience, and most reliable diagnostician.
The demotion never stuck, because Loki's tenure had an agenda: he was hunting the Exile of Singhsoon, a spell concentrating all of a realm's magic in one pair of hands, which Strange had hidden away precisely so no single sorcerer could hold it. Strange reclaimed his title by the run's end — but he kept the dog.
Why It's Obscure
Between world-ending threats, Marvel's greatest magician once held office hours for sick pets.
