Stephen Strange does not advertise his family, and one relative explains why. His younger brother Victor Strange died in a senseless instant — bolting from Stephen’s apartment after a furious argument over their father’s deathbed, straight into traffic. Stephen, then a surgeon too proud to have visited the dying man, made a decision only guilt and money could reach: he had Victor’s body placed in cryogenic storage, hoping the future might undo the present.
The future arrived wearing a magician’s hat. Years later — Stephen Strange, Sorcerer Supreme by then — he secretly tested revival spells over his brother’s frozen body, working from books he only half understood. One of them worked. It was the Vampiric Verses, an ancient incantation for raising the dead as vampires, and when the storage chamber failed in Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #10 (October 1989), Victor Strange sat up undead.
What followed was tragedy in a borrowed costume. The voodoo priestess Marie Laveau claimed the newborn vampire, named him Baron Blood after the Nazi vampire Captain America once beheaded, and pointed him at the Darkhold. Freed of her, Victor tried to be a hero — feeding only on criminals, taking the name Khiron, loving a mortal woman. Then he learned the arithmetic: everyone he fed on rose as a vampire too. In Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme #56 (1993), Victor Strange drove a stake into his own heart.
