Today's Fact

Otto Octavius did the maths on his own defeats and reached the conclusion every Spider-Man villain since has copied.

DOCTOR OCTOPUS INVENTED THE SUPER-VILLAIN TEAM-UP — HE BUILT THE SINISTER SIX BECAUSE ONE GENIUS KEPT LOSING ALONE!
The Featured Fact

By 1964 Otto Octavius had already been beaten by Spider-Man more than once, and his response was not a bigger tentacle — it was an org chart. In Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1 (1964) he sent word to every criminal Spider-Man had humiliated and assembled five of them — Electro, Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio, the Sandman and the Vulture — under his own leadership as the Sinister Six, the first organised super-villain team in Spider-Man's world.

The plan itself was pure Otto: methodical, theatrical and just flawed enough to fail. Each member would fight Spider-Man one at a time at a location tied to his own powers, wearing the hero down stage by stage, while Octavius held Betty Brant — and, by accident of timing, Aunt May — hostage to guarantee the hero played along. Sequential duels, it turned out, are also a perfect way to lose six times in one afternoon.

The failure hardly matters next to the precedent. The Sinister Six became a permanent institution, reforming under Octavius and others for sixty years, and the Annual that launched them also taught every later villain the same lesson Otto learned first: if one genius keeps losing alone, hire five more.

Why It's Obscure

Before villain teams were a genre habit, one frustrated physicist with four steel arms invented the format out of spite.

1964
The first roster — Electro, Kraven, Mysterio, Sandman and the Vulture answered Octavius's call in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, the debut of the Sinister Six.
The flaw
One at a time — Otto ordered his five specialists to fight Spider-Man sequentially rather than all at once, politely handing the hero five separate winnable fights.
The leverage
Two hostages — The bait was Betty Brant, kidnapped to lure Spider-Man through the gauntlet; Aunt May was swept up with her and spent the ordeal admiring her captor's manners.
The legacy
Sixty years of Sixes — The line-up has rotated through dozens of villains and several leaders ever since, but the founding chairman remains Otto Octavius.
