Today's Fact
The strongest one there is met the one set of arms in the Marvel Universe that does not bend, break, or care.
In Spider-Man Vol. 1 #19 (1992), the second chapter of Revenge of the Sinister Six, the Hulk crashed Doctor Octopus's reunion tour and did what the Hulk does: Vulture, Electro, Mysterio and Hobgoblin each went down to a single blow. Then he reached Otto Octavius — and Otto grabbed him first, held him at tentacle's length, pounded him senseless, threw him clean out of the warehouse, and left the strongest Avenger unconscious on the pavement.
The arms were the whole trick, and they were twelve years in the making. Otto had first commissioned adamantium tentacles back in Daredevil Vol. 1 #165 (1980), only for Daredevil to beat him during the shakedown tests; a later prison break with the arms was shut down by Iron Man before Otto could enjoy them. By 1992 he finally had his indestructible harness back, and he had a speech ready: not even Thor, and not even the Hulk, would stand before them. For one issue, the speech was accurate.
It remains the high-water mark of Octavius's career — and it came with an expiry date. Months later, in Incredible Hulk Vol. 1 #396 (1992), the rematch in Las Vegas lasted exactly as long as it took the Hulk to pull Otto close and knock him out with a flick of one finger. Otto keeps the first result framed; the Hulk keeps the second one quiet.
Why It's Obscure
Supervillains have survived the Hulk and escaped the Hulk; almost none can say they switched him off.
