Today's Fact
Otto Octavius planned for everything except a vacancy — his most devoted student treated his death as a job opening.
When the clone Kaine murdered Otto Octavius during the Clone Saga, the tentacles did not stay empty for long. Dr. Carolyn Trainer — a virtual-reality genius who had visited Otto in prison, encoded his thoughts and memories into a program called the Master Programmer, and turned her own secretary into the superhuman Stunner — took a set of tentacles for herself and debuted as the new Doctor Octopus in Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #406 (1995).
Trainer was no copycat in a costume. She controlled her harness through a mental interface of her own design, added a personal force field Otto never had, and ran his criminal organisation while secretly working toward the only goal that mattered to her: using the digitised Master Programmer to bring her mentor back from the dead.
The plan worked, after a fashion — the Hand resurrected Otto, and Carolyn injected the Master Programmer's data into him, returning both his memories and his tentacles. She stepped aside without a fight, rebranding herself Lady Octopus and serving as his assistant: the only Doctor Octopus ever to inherit the name, hold it honourably, and hand it back.
Why It's Obscure
Supervillain mantles usually change hands by theft or murder; this one passed by something closer to devotion.
