Today's Fact
Victor von Doom builds his doubles to be obeyed without question; one of them ended up taking orders from Hank Pym instead.
Doom's robotic doubles are built to speak, posture and command exactly like their maker, which made the unit later designated Doombot C-53 a singular embarrassment to Latveria: captured and held prisoner by Hank Pym, it was still sitting in his lab after the defeat of Ultron in Age of Ultron. Pym, newly unwilling to treat any artificial intelligence as disposable, rebuilt the prisoner instead of scrapping it — and fitted it with a failsafe worthy of its creator, a micro black hole in its chest, held in check by time-release Pym Particles in case it ever turned on the team.
When the rogue intelligence Dimitrios — born from the very virus Pym had used against Ultron — began colonising the world's networks, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Monica Chang tasked Pym with a machine-age response. The roster he assembled for Avengers A.I. Vol. 1 #1 (2013) put the Doombot on an Avengers team alongside the Vision and Victor Mancha, two of Ultron's own descendants, to hunt a third. The Doombot served the full twelve-issue run, rescuing the new intelligence Alexis in Atlanta and fighting a Sentinel at the Washington Monument, all while delivering Doom's trademark pronouncements in the first person.
Service changed the machine in ways Doom never authorised. It formed a genuine friendship with Victor Mancha — its first — and after the team disbanded following Pym's death, the Doombot eventually resurfaced at Victor's side among the Runaways, keeping house for teenagers in Los Angeles. Latveria's perfect instrument of remote tyranny retired, in effect, as a chaperone.
Why It's Obscure
Doom has lost to Reed Richards, to squirrels and to his own pride — but only one of his creations has ever resigned and taken a job with the opposition.
