Today's Fact
A cure sixty years in the failing, delivered by the last man anyone wanted holding the wand.
Reed Richards has spent his entire career failing at one job: undoing the cosmic-ray accident that turned his best friend into the Thing. In One World Under Doom #2 (2025), Victor von Doom — newly installed as Sorcerer Supreme and ruler of the world — simply cast a spell, and the orange rock shattered away to leave an ordinary, stunned Ben Grimm standing in the wreckage.
Doom was not being kind. He announced the act as proof of Richards' lifelong incompetence, a public demonstration that the smartest man alive had been outdone at his most personal failure by the colleague he could never beat. Ben, who had long since made his peace with the rocky form, never asked for the favour and did not experience it as one.
The fallout ran through Fantastic Four #30–31 (2025): stripped of his strength, Ben slid into despair even as the team's own powers began to fade, because the Four's gifts cannot stay separated indefinitely. Restoring him took a desperate trip through the multiverse — undoing, at great cost, the one thing Doom had ever given the Fantastic Four for free.
Why It's Obscure
Richards tried science for decades. Doom needed an afternoon and a grudge.
