Today's Fact

Hospitality, Latverian style, nearly made Victor von Doom a god in Fantastic Four #57 (1966) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. The Silver Surfer, newly exiled to Earth by Galactus, accepted an invitation to Castle Doom and admired the ruler's laboratories — and never noticed Doom's inductor devices until they siphoned the Power Cosmic straight out of his silver skin.
Doom did not spend the theft on anything small. Standing on the Surfer's own board, he proclaimed himself master of all mankind, terrorized the globe through Fantastic Four #58–59 and battered the Fantastic Four with energy that could reshape matter, while a powerless Norrin Radd could only watch his own gifts fired back at the world as a tyrant's artillery.
The stolen godhood carried a hidden leash. Reed Richards lured Doom after a decoy craft, and when Doom pursued it past the edge of the atmosphere in Fantastic Four #60, he slammed into the barrier Galactus had raised around Earth to imprison the Surfer — the power tore away from him and flowed back to its rightful owner, leaving Doom falling and the Surfer whole again.
Why It's Obscure
Reed Richards builds machines to study the universe. Doom builds machines to mug it.
