DOOM SUMMONED MEPHISTO EVERY MIDSUMMER TO BARGAIN FOR HIS MOTHER'S SOUL — AND OFFERED HIS OWN INSTEAD!
The Featured Fact

Once a year, on the midsummer solstice, Victor von Doom performed a ritual in Castle Doom to summon Mephisto and haggle for the soul of his mother, Cynthia von Doom, whose bargain with the demon had damned her long before Victor ever wore a mask. In Fantastic Four Annual #20 (1987), the appointment came due again — and this time Doom had brought along a guest: young Franklin Richards, whose raw power Doom hoped might tip the negotiation.

When Mephisto appeared, Doom made the most un-Doom-like offer in his long career: he proposed his own soul in exchange for his mother's. Mephisto declined the trade and reached for Franklin's soul as a bonus instead, at which point Kristoff Vernard crashed the ceremony at the head of an army of Doombots, each convinced it served the one true Doom, and the bargaining session collapsed into open war inside the castle.

Franklin ended the haggling himself, unleashing enough of his barely understood power to frighten Mephisto into releasing everyone and quitting the field. Doom's yearly summons therefore accomplished nothing that year except humiliation — yet the appointments went on regardless, because surrendering his mother's soul permanently was the one defeat Victor von Doom could never schedule around.

Why It's Obscure

Empires can be conquered on any weekday. One night a year, Doom dropped the world-domination calendar and kept an appointment in Hell's waiting room.

Midsummer
The standing appointment — The solstice ritual was an annual fixture of Doom's reign, prepared with his servant Boris and timed to the one night the summons would hold.
The offer
His soul for hers — Doom proposed trading himself for Cynthia von Doom outright, a selfless bid so out of character that Mephisto treated it as an opening gambit rather than a final price.
Franklin
The bargaining chip — Doom had positioned the Richards boy beside the ritual circle as leverage, and Mephisto's attempt to simply collect the child is what turned negotiation into battle.
Kristoff
The interruption — Kristoff Vernard's Doombot army stormed in mid-summoning, and the robots' confusion over which Doom to obey gave Mephisto his opening.
1987
Fantastic Four Annual #20 — The annual is by Steve Englehart and Brent Eric Anderson-era fill-in talent; its ritual scene is the clearest look at how routine Doom's war for his mother had become.
