DOOM BECAME IRON MAN — AND SPENT A YEAR TRYING TO BE A HERO IN STARK'S ARMOR!

The Featured Fact

Victor von Doom emerged from Secret Wars (2015) with the face he had hidden for decades finally healed, and with Reed Richards gone from the board. When Civil War II left Tony Stark comatose and presumed dead, Doom made the strangest decision of his life in Infamous Iron Man #1 (October 2016), by Brian Michael Bendis and Alex Maleev: he visited Stark's artificial intelligence and announced that he would take up the mantle of Iron Man himself.

He built gunmetal-gray Iron Man armor of his own design, kept his hooded cloak over it, and went hunting villains instead of heroes. His opening campaign rescued S.H.I.E.L.D. director Maria Hill from Diablo, offered the Mad Thinker a chance at redemption before dismantling his laboratory, and rounded up criminals who discovered that a Doom trying to help was somehow more frightening than a Doom trying to rule.

Almost nobody believed the conversion. Ben Grimm spent the series hunting him on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s orders, and Doom's apologies to frightened bystanders landed like threats. The experiment finally collapsed after the Hood's demonic claws scarred Doom's healed face again and Stark returned — Victor withdrew to a Latveria sliding into civil war and put the iron mask back on.

Why It's Obscure

For twelve issues, Marvel's defining tyrant answered emergencies in another man's armor and apologized to the people he frightened — and the apology may have scared them most of all.

2015

A healed face — Secret Wars ends with Doom's scarring undone for the first time since his origin, removing the grievance that had justified the mask for most of his published life.

2016

The announcement — Infamous Iron Man #1 has Victor inform Stark's A.I. of his decision in Stark's own building, treating the legacy like an office he is entitled to assume.

The armor

Doom, but Stark-shaped — his suit copies Iron Man's silhouette and repulsors, then drapes the Latverian hood and cloak over the top, as if the branding negotiation ended in a draw.

The Thing

An unconvinced audience — Ben Grimm pursues Doom across the run, reading every rescue as a scheme, and his suspicion is the reaction Doom cannot argue his way past.

Aftermath

Scarred twice — the Hood reopens the wound on Doom's face during the follow-up in Invincible Iron Man, and the healed, hopeful chapter closes with the old mask.
