Doom's face was barely scarred — he disfigured himself!
The Featured Fact

Fantastic Four Annual #2 (1964), "The Birth of Doctor Doom!" by Stan Lee & Jack Kirby — the full origin. At Empire State University, Victor von Doom's experimental machine explodes after he ignores Reed Richards's warning about a flaw in his calculations. Expelled and disgraced, bandaged, Victor flees.

Here's the part nobody remembers: later retellings revealed the explosion barely scarred him — just a noticeable mark on one cheek. In John Byrne's origin retelling in Fantastic Four #278 (1985), Victor reaches Tibet, has the monks forge his armor — and then orders the mask placed on his face while it is still glowing red-hot. "Pain is for lesser men." He hurls his burning face into the mountain snow. That is what truly scorches his face — a self-inflicted branding.

Ed Brubaker's Books of Doom #6 (2005) doubles down on it: a single small scar, and vanity did the rest. Doom's legend of a ruined face was, at least in part, authored by Doom himself — which is why, when the 2015 Secret Wars left him with a healed face, the world's most vain tyrant briefly tried to be a hero instead.

Why It's Obscure

Everyone knows the mask. Almost nobody knows that in the version of the story Marvel kept refining for 40 years, the mask itself did more damage than the accident — and Doom did it to himself on purpose. The greatest monster of the Marvel Universe is the guy who couldn't stand one little scar.

1962
Fantastic Four #5 — Doom debuts as Reed's old college rival, already masked. No explanation for the face — Kirby keeps it hidden. Stan Lee & Jack Kirby.
1964
Fantastic Four Annual #2 — The full origin: the Roma boy, the dead mother, the machine, Reed's ignored warning, the explosion, the bandages, the Tibetan monks, the mask. The story every retelling builds on.
1985
Fantastic Four #278 — John Byrne retells the origin and shows the face: a noticeable but small scar. Then the red-hot mask. Doom's vanity, not the accident, writes the legend. "True Lies."
2005
Books of Doom #6 — Ed Brubaker's retelling of Doom's life echoes the Byrne version: one minor scar, and an ego that could not survive imperfection. Nature vs. nurture, and Doom chose nurture-by-furnace.
Trivia
After Secret Wars (2015), Doom's face was healed — and he briefly operated as the Infamous Iron Man (2016), trying heroism on for size. Proof the ugliness was always mostly upstairs.
