Today's Fact
Wade Wilson's codename sounds like a punchline until you learn it was the scoreboard in a room where men were tortured for sport.
Wade Wilson washed out of the Weapon X programme and was shipped to the Hospice, a facility that was supposed to treat failed superhuman operatives. In reality its patients were raw material for Dr. Killebrew and his assistant Ajax, who ran torturous experiments for curiosity and amusement. The inmates coped the only way available to them: they ran a dead pool, betting on how long each subject would survive the next round on the table.
Wade, in constant pain and courting a vision of Death herself, tried to lose that bet on purpose. He taunted Ajax with his real name — Francis — until Ajax retaliated against Wade's friend Worm, lobotomising him. Wade ended Worm's suffering himself, and under Killebrew's rules a patient who killed another patient was executed on the spot. Ajax tore Wade's heart out and left him in the room to cool.
The heart grew back. Wade's hunger for revenge jump-started the dormant healing factor drawn from Wolverine's DNA, regenerating the organ Killebrew's science never could on schedule. He shot his way out of the Hospice, freed the surviving patients, and took the name of the game he had beaten by refusing to die: Deadpool — the one entry in the pool nobody would ever collect on. The full account was finally told in Deadpool & Death Annual '98 (1998).
Why It's Obscure
Most codenames are branding exercises; this one is a receipt from the worst room Wade Wilson ever lived in, and he wears it on purpose.
