Today's Fact

Wade Wilson's famous inner voices once included a tenant who had moved in without signing anything, and the eviction required heavy machinery: Thor and Luke Cage.

DEADPOOL'S SECOND VOICE WAS A REAL PERSON LIVING IN HIS HEAD — MADCAP MOVED IN AFTER THOR BURNED THEM BOTH TO ASH!
The Featured Fact

Readers of Deadpool's 2008 series noticed his inner monologue suddenly running in two kinds of caption boxes — his usual yellow, and a plain white set with a different attitude. The explanation arrived five years later in Deadpool Annual Vol. 3 #1 (2013): before that series began, Wade had run into Madcap, the insanity-inducing villain from Captain America #307, and a fight involving Daredevil ended with Thor reducing both men to a single pile of ash.

Two healing factors in one ash pile did what healing factors do. Deadpool regenerated — and Madcap, whose consciousness had mingled with the regrowth, came back inside him, taking up residence as the white-box voice in Wade's head. For years of publication, storylines played the second voice as a symptom; in continuity it was a houseguest, quietly steering Wade's memories and behaviour for Madcap's own amusement.

The separation was as elegant as anything in Wade's life: the two persuaded Thor and Luke Cage to tear Deadpool's body in half, wishbone-style, and each half regenerated a complete man — one Deadpool, one Madcap, free at last. Madcap celebrated his independence by impersonating Deadpool and terrorising Wade's friends, confirming that the voice in your head is considerably easier to live with than the same maniac with his own body back.

Why It's Obscure

A lettering choice on the page turned out to be a diagnosis, and the diagnosis turned out to be a person.

1985
Madcap before the merger — Madcap debuted in Captain America #307, a former cartoonist dosed with AIM's Compound X07, gifted with a healing factor and the power to drive people mad by eye contact.
The ash pile
One lightning bolt, two tenants — Thor's strike incinerated both men mid-fight; Deadpool's regeneration rebuilt one body around two minds, because Madcap's ashes were in the mix.
White boxes
A retcon you could see — The white caption boxes in Deadpool's 2008 appearances were retroactively Madcap speaking, a visual tell hiding in plain sight for five years.
The wishbone
Separation, Deadpool-style — Thor and Luke Cage pulled the shared body apart and let each half grow its owner back, the only divorce in comics settled by bisection.
