Today's Fact

Joe Kelly's 1997 cult classic dropped Wade Wilson inside a Stan Lee and John Romita story — and let him heckle it from within.

DEADPOOL TIME-TRAVELED INTO A 1967 SPIDER-MAN COMIC — AND SPENT THE ISSUE PRETENDING TO BE PETER PARKER!
The Featured Fact

In Deadpool Vol. 1 #11 (1997), "With Great Power Comes Great Coincidence," a teleport accident involving Doorman hurls Deadpool and Blind Al backward in time — directly into the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #47 from 1967. They land on Aunt May and knock her flat, which leaves Wade with a cover story to maintain and a timeline to protect.

The solution is pure Wade: Blind Al poses as Aunt May while Deadpool fires up an image inducer and impersonates Peter Parker, explaining away his voice as puberty. He then blunders through Peter's actual 1967 storyline, including Kraven the Hunter crashing Gwen Stacy's party, taking Peter's place in the fight.

To get home, Wade needs a young Weasel — in 1967 a straightlaced Empire State science student and Peter Parker's rival — to repair his teleporter. Wade's persuasion campaign ends with him sabotaging Weasel's reputation and offering him his first drink, meaning Deadpool may be personally responsible for turning his future weapons dealer into Weasel.

Why It's Obscure

The issue that taught a generation of readers what Deadpool was for: breaking the fourth wall from inside somebody else's classic.

1997
Kelly and Woods, unleashed — writer Joe Kelly later said the book's constant threat of cancellation meant nobody was supervising what they got away with.
1967
Panels, recycled honestly — the issue rebuilds its pages around John Romita Sr.'s original Amazing Spider-Man #47 artwork and dialogue rhythms.
THE COVER
An homage with intent — the cover restages Amazing Fantasy #15, Spider-Man's first appearance, with Deadpool in the webslinger's place.
THE VOICE
Fourth wall, first cracks — critics single this issue out as where Deadpool's audience-aware, meta personality truly locked into place.
