Today's Fact
Her third-ever solo issue skipped the usual starter villain and went straight to the monarch of Latveria — who did not want a fight. He wanted an errand run.
Alison Blaire's big break was supposed to be a United Nations charity summit, agent, stage manager and all. Instead Doctor Doom crashed her orbit hunting the Jewels of Doom — and when one of them, the mystical Merlin Stone, sat inside the Nightmare Dimension where Doom's own reach faltered, he found a solution with a record contract: he blasted the young singer senseless and sent Dazzler in to fetch it.
The dimension did what it is named for. Confronted by the self-doubt her father had spent years planting in her, Alison had to fight her own worst opinion of herself before she could touch the prize — and she came out carrying the jewels anyway, which is where her obedience ended. Face to face with Doom again, she destroyed the jewels rather than deliver them, and only the Human Torch's arrival kept the retaliation from being fatal.
Marvel's official biography lists the whole humiliation in one breath — fought Doctor Doom, fetched for Doctor Doom, defied Doctor Doom — inside her first solo year. The disco queen's third issue is secretly a hostage story where the hostage wins by smashing the ransom.
Why It's Obscure
Every young hero gets a first Doom story eventually. Dazzler got hers before her album did, and Doom treated her like a courier service.
