Today's Fact

Wilson Fisk's cruellest contract was not a hit — it was a romance, staffed by a woman whose own mind kept changing the terms.

THE KINGPIN HIRED TYPHOID MARY TO MAKE DAREDEVIL FALL IN LOVE — HER GENTLE SELF DATED MATT MURDOCK WHILE HER OTHER SELF HUNTED HIM!
The Featured Fact

In Daredevil Vol. 1 #254 (1988), the Kingpin went shopping for a very specific weapon and found Mary Walker, a mutant assassin whose dissociative identity disorder split her between personalities — sweet, kind Mary; the violent Typhoid Mary; and worse ones behind her. Fisk's commission was not murder. He hired her to seduce and emotionally destroy his archnemesis, calculating that a man who had just rebuilt his life on love could be ruined by it.

The disguise was flawless because it was physiological. Mary's personalities carried different heart rates, different voices, even different scents — and Matt Murdock reads the world through exactly those channels. So Mary the hospital volunteer could sit beside the blind lawyer, earn his trust and then his kisses, while Typhoid Mary ambushed Daredevil at night taunting him by name, and Matt's radar sense swore to him these were two different women.

The arrangement delighted Typhoid precisely because it wounded everyone: Matt fell for Mary, Daredevil burned for Typhoid, and Mary herself was being set up to be hurt by the man her other self was courting. Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr. built the saga across Daredevil Vol. 1 #254–263 (1988), and it remains the one time the Kingpin attacked Daredevil's heart with a contract instead of his body with a killer — though Typhoid was happy to supply both services.

Why It's Obscure

Fisk had broken Matt Murdock's life with paperwork before; this time he outsourced the demolition to a love affair.

1988
A debut with a job description — Typhoid Mary first appeared in Daredevil Vol. 1 #254, created by Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr., already carrying the Kingpin's commission in her pocket.
Two scents
Built to beat a radar sense — Each of Mary's personalities presented a different heartbeat and smell, the only disguise in comics engineered specifically to fool a blind man's remaining senses.
One million dollars
The price of a broken heart — Fisk offered a fortune not for Daredevil's death but for his seduction, the most Wilson Fisk sentence ever written about Wilson Fisk.
Mary Walker
The volunteer who wasn't — Mary introduced herself at a hospital for blind patients with an invented story about nursing her blind father, and helped a blinded boy named Tyrone as her way in.
