DAREDEVIL TRADED HIS RED SUIT FOR BLACK-AND-RED ARMOR — THEN LET THE WORLD BURY MATT MURDOCK!
The Featured Fact

By 1993 Matt Murdock was trading blows with enemies a cloth costume could not answer, and in Daredevil #321 he unveiled a replacement for the scarlet suit he had worn since 1965: a black-and-red armored costume with silver shoulder plates, plated knees and reinforced limbs, assembled during the Fall from Grace storyline in Daredevil #319–325 (1993) by D.G. Chichester and Scott McDaniel.

The armor happened because the classic outfit literally fell apart on him. While protecting Eddie Passim, a telepathic former agent hunted for his knowledge of a mutagenic chemical lost in the New York subways, Matt watched his red suit shredded in combat against mercenaries and against Hellspawn, his demonic double — so he built the plated version from scavenged high-tech materials and fought on inside it.

Fall from Grace then ended with a stranger change than any costume: none at all. After Hellspawn's death, the doppelganger's corpse mutated into an exact copy of Matt Murdock, and Matt let that body be identified as his own, faking his death to escape a life that was closing in. He resurfaced as Jack Batlin — a name borrowed from his father, Battlin' Jack Murdock — while Elektra, returned from the dead during the same arc, kept his secret.

Why It's Obscure

The nineties handed every hero a set of shoulder pads. Daredevil took the pads, kept the horns, and threw in a funeral for himself.

1993
The plated debut — The armored suit first appears in Daredevil #321, mid-battle with Hellspawn, and remains his regular costume until Daredevil #345 in 1995 restores the classic red.
The virus
A prize under the subway — The arc's MacGuffin is a chemical agent lost beneath New York decades earlier, hunted at once by the Hand, by Silver Sable's Wild Pack and by the rogue general who sent them running.
The double
A corpse with his face — The Infinity War doppelganger's body reverts after death into Matt's likeness, handing a living man the one prop every convincing fake death requires.
Jack Batlin
Named for his father — Matt's replacement identity takes its surname from Battlin' Jack Murdock's ring name, so the reborn lawyer hides behind his murdered father's nickname.
