DAREDEVIL'S FIRST SUIT WAS YELLOW — SEWN FROM HIS MURDERED FATHER'S BOXING ROBE!
The Featured Fact

Before the devil wore red, he wore his father's colours. When Matt Murdock debuted in Daredevil #1 (1964), by Stan Lee and Bill Everett, the costume was a carnival of yellow, black and red — yellow tights, yellow cowl, a single red D on the chest. It lasted exactly six issues: Wally Wood redesigned him into the all-red suit for Daredevil #7 (1965), and the yellow original spent decades filed away as an embarrassing first draft.

Then, nearly forty years on, Daredevil: Yellow (2001) by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale explained what the yellow actually was. After Battlin' Jack Murdock was murdered by the Fixer's men — punishment for winning the fight he had been ordered to throw, with young Matt in the crowd — his son took Jack's boxing gear and made the suit out of it: the robe, the gloves, the boots, cut down and hand-sewn by a blind law student into the uniform he would avenge him in.

That retelling reframes the loudest costume in Marvel history as a mourning garment. The yellow was never a fashion error or a printer's whim; in the version of the story Marvel now tells, it is the exact shade of the last robe Jack Murdock ever wore into a ring — carried into every rooftop fight of Matt's first year as a deliberate, wearable memorial.

Why It's Obscure

Six issues of yellow, then sixty years of red: the suit everybody mocked turned out to be the most personal thing Matt Murdock ever wore.

1964
Daredevil #1. Stan Lee and Bill Everett launch the Man Without Fear in yellow, black and red — with one D on the chest and a billy club converted from his cane.
SIX ISSUES
A short first run. The yellow suit headlined half a dozen issues before Wally Wood's all-red redesign arrived in Daredevil #7 (1965) and simply never left.
2001
Daredevil: Yellow. Loeb and Sale's retelling reveals the material: Battlin' Jack's boxing robe, gloves and boots, sewn by Matt's own hands after the Fixer's hit.
THE FIXER
Why the robe mattered. Jack was killed for refusing to dive in his comeback fight. Wearing his colours into battle was Matt's verdict, delivered nightly.
