Today's Fact
Verified against three independent sources. Issues cited below.
Matt Murdock went to prison as Matt Murdock. After his double life was exposed and the FBI arrested him, in 'The Devil in Cell Block D,' Daredevil Vol. 2 #82–87 (2006), by Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark, Matt is sent to Ryker's Island to await trial — locked in with criminals he helped put there, including the Kingpin, and forbidden by his own legal strategy from fighting like Daredevil.
So Hell's Kitchen got a substitute Devil. At Matt's request, Danny Rand — Iron Fist — put on the Daredevil costume and patrolled in his place, both to protect the neighbourhood and to sow doubt. That is also why the 'Daredevil' who confronts Iron Man in Civil War is actually Danny Rand, not Matt.
Inside, the arc turned brutal: Foggy Nelson was apparently murdered visiting the prison, a riot was engineered to kill both Murdock and Wilson Fisk, and Matt was forced into uneasy combat alongside Fisk and even Bullseye. Matt eventually escaped and fled to Europe to hunt the conspiracy behind his exposure.
Why It's Obscure
Daredevil has faked deaths and identities before. Doing time in Ryker's while another hero literally wore his suit in a major crossover is the version even Civil War readers mostly missed.
