Daredevil's archenemy hired him. After Secret Empire, Wilson Fisk — the Kingpin of Crime — got himself elected Mayor of New York City (revealed in Daredevil #28, 2017, by Charles Soule and Ron Garney; the election was later shown to have been rigged, though Fisk would have won anyway). Then Fisk offered Matt Murdock the post of Deputy Mayor. Thanks to the Purple Children, the world had forgotten Murdock was Daredevil — Fisk thought he was hiring a respectable lawyer and burying him in paperwork.
Matt accepted — on purpose. From inside City Hall, the Man Without Fear could aim his super-hearing down the hall and eavesdrop on his archenemy's every meeting, hunting for proof of the crimes he knew were still happening. The "Mayor Fisk" arc ran through Daredevil #595–600 (2017–2018) as Marvel restored legacy numbering: Fisk pushed an anti-vigilante agenda while his own deputy mayor spied on him from inside the administration.
Then the Hand attacked New York, and a ninja assault left Mayor Fisk in a coma in Daredevil #600. Under the line of succession, Deputy Mayor Murdock became acting Mayor of New York — Daredevil ran the city, using the mayor's office and resources to organize its defense. When Fisk recovered, Matt traded the seat back for an end to the anti-vigilante campaign and resigned — the follow-up arc is literally titled "Mayor Murdock" (Daredevil #601–605).
Why It's Obscure
The Kingpin in the mayor's office gets remembered. The part people forget is who he put one door down the hall — and that for a brief stretch, the Devil of Hell's Kitchen was the acting Mayor of New York City.
