Today's Fact

After years fighting the Hand, the ancient ninja clan that had haunted him since the Frank Miller era, Matt Murdock did the unthinkable: at the close of Ed Brubaker's run, he took leadership of the Hand himself. His pitch was reform — turn a murder cult into a force for justice in Hell's Kitchen. Instead, in Shadowland (2010), he built a fortress-prison in the heart of Hell's Kitchen, the eponymous Shadowland, and ruled it as its warlord.
It went wrong fast. Manipulated from the shadows by the Snakeroot, a cabal of Beast-worshippers inside the Hand, Matt grew more extreme — imprisoning criminals in Shadowland and, in a duel, killing his longtime enemy Bullseye with Bullseye's own sais. That murder completed a ritual and let the Hand's demon, the Beast, possess him. Now his old allies — Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Moon Knight, Elektra and more — found themselves fighting Daredevil and his ninja army in the streets.
The heroes eventually realised Matt was possessed, not merely gone bad. Iron Fist used his mystical chi to purge the Beast from him, and Matt — to stop the demon retaking him — sacrificed himself, breaking the Beast's hold on Hell's Kitchen. Elektra later revived him, and a guilt-ridden Matt left New York for Daredevil: Reborn, leaving Hell's Kitchen in the hands of Black Panther.
Why It's Obscure
Daredevil turning villain is not a What If? — it was a line-wide 2010 event. The hero who once fought the Hand for decades ended up wearing its black suit, running its fortress, and needing his own friends to exorcise him. It is the strangest heel turn in the character's history, and it started with good intentions.
