Today's Fact

Piotr Rasputin has buried a brother, a sister and a father. The family member he never counted is alive, well, and living off the grid in Antarctica.

COLOSSUS HAS A SON IN THE SAVAGE LAND NAMED PETER — AND HE PLAYED WITH THE BOY WITHOUT EVER KNOWING!
The Featured Fact

On an early X-Men mission to the Savage Land, Colossus pulled the tribal woman Nereel and her friend Shakani out from under a rampaging dinosaur, and the two women honoured their rescuer with a ritual celebration on a nearby island. Piotr, barely more than a teenager and painfully shy, went along with a custom he only half understood. The episode was later retold in the backup story in Classic X-Men #21 (1988) — and it left behind a consequence nobody mentioned for years: a child.

When the X-Men returned to a ruined Savage Land in X-Men Annual #12 (1988), Nereel had risen to lead her people and had a young son — named Peter, the English form of Piotr's own name. She never told Colossus the boy was his. In Uncanny X-Men #250 (1989), Piotr met the child properly, played with him, and walked away still not knowing, while his teammate Longshot — whose heightened senses read the truth instantly — had promised Nereel he would keep her secret.

Readers were eventually handed the confirmation Piotr never got: in the Colossus: Bloodline storyline, young Peter, far away in the Savage Land, was shown sensing the deaths of other Rasputin relatives as they fell — a reaction only a member of the bloodline would share. The boy is Colossus' son by every signal the comics give, and his father remains, officially, the last to know.

Why It's Obscure

A whole son, hidden in plain sight behind a familiar name and one friend's kept promise.

The rescue
A dinosaur, a ritual, a secret — the Savage Land encounter began as a rescue from a T-Rex and ended as a tribal rite of gratitude; Piotr understood what had happened even less than he understood the language.
The name
Peter, son of Peter — Nereel named the boy Peter, the everyday English version of Piotr — a confession hidden inside a christening, delivered to a father who never heard it as one.
The friend who knew
Longshot kept the secret — of everyone present, only Longshot saw the connection at a glance, and he chose Nereel's wishes over Piotr's right to know, carrying the secret out of the Savage Land with him.
The bloodline test
Proof by grief — years later the boy felt distant Rasputin deaths ripple through him during the Bloodline affair, the comics' quiet way of stamping his birth certificate for the readers alone.
