Today's Fact
The Fifty State Initiative gave every state a super-team. New Jersey drew Nighthawk, She-Hulk, Blazing Skull — and a very confused Russian.
When Cyclops disbanded the X-Men after Messiah Complex, Tony Stark came calling with an Initiative posting Piotr Rasputin never expected: the Defenders — not the famous non-team, but an official, state-assigned squad headquartered in New Jersey. The Last Defenders #1 (2008) put him on a roster with Nighthawk in charge, She-Hulk, and the flame-headed Blazing Skull.
The assignment lasted barely longer than the paperwork. The rookie Defenders' first outing tangled with the Sons of the Serpent, who had summoned the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, and the friction between Stark's handlers and the squad tore the experiment apart — Stark disbanded the team almost as soon as he had launched it.
Piotr took the collapse as a sign and went home. Accompanied by Wolverine and Nightcrawler, he travelled back to Russia to reckon with his family's graves and his own future — and only afterwards drifted back to the X-Men, the Jersey chapter closed behind him like a toll receipt.
Why It's Obscure
It remains the strangest line on Piotr's resume: between saving mutantkind and dying for it, he was briefly government-issue Garden State muscle.
