COLOSSUS

Today's Fact

Piotr Rasputin's armour is not a shell he wears. The transformation replaces his whole body — and a body made of living metal has no use for lungs, meals or canteens.

IN HIS STEEL FORM, COLOSSUS NEEDS NO AIR, NO FOOD AND NO WATER — HIS BODY RUNS ON NONE OF THEM!
The Featured Fact

Reference works on Colossus have repeated one quiet line for decades: while transformed, Piotr needs no food, water or oxygen. His mutation does not plate his skin — it converts every tissue, organs included, into an organic steel-like substance often compared to osmium, and a metabolism rebuilt in metal simply stops filing the usual requests. The powerhouse who debuted in Giant-Size X-Men Vol. 1 #1 (1975) can hold a fight underwater, in smoke or in a collapsed tunnel long after his teammates' air runs out.

The catch is built into the same rule. The steel state is a conscious act of will: knock Colossus out and the transformation lets go, returning a flesh-and-blood man who needs air immediately. Nor is the form a spacesuit — Marvel's own handbook tradition cautions that even armoured, he could not survive long in open vacuum, however indifferent he is to a riverbed or a burning building.

Writers have turned the footnote into spectacle more than once: stories have stranded an armoured Colossus in airless, provisionless places for stretches that would kill any other X-Man, sustained by nothing but the form itself. It reframes his famous endurance — Piotr is not merely tough enough to outlast a battle, he is biologically incapable of being starved, parched or suffocated out of one, provided he stays steel and stays awake.

Why It's Obscure

Fans catalogue what Colossus can lift. The stranger entry is what he can skip: breakfast, canteens and breathing itself, for as long as the metal holds.

Every cell
Not a coating — The change runs through organs and eyes as well as skin; there is no human machinery left inside the steel to feed or oxygenate.
The handbook line
Needs: none — Marvel reference entries state the armoured Colossus requires no food, water or air, while flagging vacuum as the one environment beyond the form.
The fine print
Stay conscious — The transformation is willed. A knockout drops the steel, and the ordinary man who replaces it starts needing breath on the spot.
Battlefield math
Unstarvable — Sieges, submersion and smoke favour the X-Man who can simply decline to breathe until the fighting ends.
