Today's Fact

She never learned his language, she was seeing the Human Torch, and she still spent her own life to return his.

COLOSSUS FELL IN LOVE WITH AN ALIEN HEALER ON BATTLEWORLD — AND SHE DIED BRINGING HIM BACK TO LIFE!
The Featured Fact

When the Beyonder assembled Battleworld for Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars (1984–1985), the heroes sheltered in an alien village whose healer, Zsaji, mended their wounded with a touch. Colossus arrived in her care half-broken by the Wrecking Crew in issue #5, watched her heal him, and fell for her on the spot — despite sharing no language with her, and despite the small complication that she was already involved with the Human Torch.

Zsaji's gift ran on her own life force, and the bill kept climbing: reviving the Wasp from a death-like stasis left her drained and grey. At the war's end, with heroes lying dead around her, she poured what remained of herself into raising Colossus and the others — and the effort killed her. The man of steel survived Battleworld because a woman he could not hold a conversation with decided he was worth her whole life.

Carrying that home proved its own wound. In Uncanny X-Men #183 (1984), Piotr sat Kitty Pryde down and told her he had fallen in love with someone else, ending their relationship; Kitty hid her heartbreak until she got back to her room, and Wolverine, furious on her behalf, dragged Colossus out to a bar to explain what his Battleworld romance had actually cost the people waiting on Earth.

Why It's Obscure

A village healer, a borrowed planet, and a love affair conducted entirely without a shared vocabulary.

1984
First appearance, last appearance — Zsaji debuts in Secret Wars #4 (August 1984) and the series that introduced her also ends her, which is partly why even seasoned X-Men readers draw a blank at her name.
Life force
Healing at retail price: one life — Every cure Zsaji worked drew directly on her own vitality, so the Wasp's revival visibly weakened her before the final, fatal round of resurrections.
Wolverine's theory
Was it even love? — Logan later speculated that Zsaji's power carried an empathic undertow, noting that both Colossus and the Human Torch fell for the woman who healed them — a suspicion the stories never confirm or clear.
Vapours
The only conversations they had — Zsaji's people kept mind-linking vapours that let minds touch directly; it was through them that she and the Torch first understood each other, while Piotr mostly communicated in longing looks.
